Technology Overview
AquaBlok® is a patented, composite-aggregate technology resembling small stones and comprised of a central core (often stone aggregate), clay or clay sized materials, and polymers.
For typical freshwater formulations of the product, AquaBlok®'s clay component usually consists largely of bentonite clay. Other types of clay materials, including attapulgite, can be incorporated into the product for saline applications. Additionally, a large variety of other minerals or materials (like organoclays, gypsum, zeolites, elemental sulfur, oxides, zero-valent iron, organics, sand, seeds, fertilizer, etc.) can also be incorporated to meet particular site- or project-specific needs. Other technology parameters, such as relative clay content or core density for example, can also be modified to meet site-specific objectives.
AquaBlok® stockpile For many sediment-related applications, AquaBlok® use generally involves applying dry masses of the product through water and across the surface of contaminated sediments. In a matter of days, the layer of initially discrete particles transforms into a homogeneous and relatively cohesive and low-permeability cap - or barrier - occurring between contaminated sediments and the overlying water column and its inhabitants (including benthic invertebrate organisms).
The hydrated thickness of this barrier will depend on a number of factors, including: the product formulation, water depth; water salinity, dry product coverage rate; number of layers, or lifts applied; and physical characteristics of the sediment.

AquaBlok® Over Sediment Depending on project needs and site-specific conditions, remedial sediment caps or barriers may be comprised exclusively of an AquaBlok® layer, or AquaBlok® in combination with other materials like sand, stone armoring materials, and/or geotextiles.

AquaBlok® use with Geotextiles In addition to its use in sediment-related projects, AquaBlok® can also be employed as a hydraulic, chemical, and/or physical barrier in a variety of other (non-sediment) applications including: lining leaking reservoirs or wastewater ponds; lining or capping landfills; low-permeability backfill for underground piping; fill material around wells and manholes; and use with erosion-control objects.

Lining Ponds If you think that the AquaBlok® composite particle system could be of use to you, please call or contact AquaBlok, Ltd. We would be happy to discuss your project needs and help determine how the technology could be effectively implemented at your site. So as to gain a better understanding of your project and site, please complete the either the Sediment Remediation Site Evaluation Form*, for environmental remediation applications, or the Geotechnical/Construction Project Evaluation Form, for geotechnical/construction applications. Upon being provided with such available site information, an estimate of the total capping area, project timeframe, etc., AquaBlok, Ltd. can provide you with at least a budgetary level cost estimate for implementing an AquaBlok-based remedy. *This form can be submitted to AquaBlok, Ltd. via fax at 419-385-2990 or .PDF at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ; or Adventus Americas, Inc., exclusive global distributors of customized AquaBlok® remediation products, via fax at 815-235-3506 or .PDF at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it |
