Uses & Application Techniques

BARACLEAR is a versatile water clarifier and an effective means to control nuisance algae under many circumstances and in many environments. Among its varied applications, BARACLEAR is suitable in residential "farm ponds" (used for swimming, fishing, wildlife viewing, aesthetic appeal, etc.), reservoirs, quarries, natural lakes, irrigation ponds, golf course water features, stormwater retention/detention ponds, and even commercial aquaculture. The product can also be used as a polishing agent in municipal or industrial settling tanks, ponds, and channels.

BARACLEAR is available in 50-lb. (5-gallon) pails and/or FBIC "Super Sacks" (for very large applications) and can be applied either by hand or with the use of traditional broadcasting equipment.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Absorption of atmospheric moisture should be avoided following the opening of the original package. Premature direct contact with water will degrade product integrity. Product can be stored indefinitely, provided it is not exposed to moisture.

24-Hour Quick Test (Pre-Application)

Prior to field application, AquaBlok, Ltd. recommends that applicators first conduct a "Quick Test" with BARACLEAR to confirm that the product is a suitable remedy for your water clarity issues. The test is very simple and should provide good guidelines as to how to proceed with BARACLEAR on a large scale.

  1. Fill a clean gallon container with a representative sample of the water to be treated.
  2. Take care to maintain the water temperature to be as consistent with environmental conditions as possible (i.e. do not leave the sample in direct sunlight or refrigerate before or during testing).
  3. Drop in a single BARACLEAR particle.

Allow the product to dissolve and fully hydrate (this should take 30-60 minutes, depending on temperature). Within two hours you should begin to see suspended solids from the water begin to settle at the bottom of the sample container. As each hour passes, you should see some improvement in the clarity of the water. You might be surprised how much settling of solids takes place in your sample. Allow water to sit overnight.

Before After

If you see improved clarity 24 hours after the particle was added, then the recommended BARACLEAR dosage will likely produce effective phosphorus removal in the targeted waterway. If some “cloudiness” remains and algae is considered to be the probable cause, repeat the test with two particles of BARACLEAR. Assess the results. If questions arise, please Contact Us.

General Use (Field Application)

If you are not a water management professional, consider collaborating with a local expert to optimize your results. Applications are not difficult, but there are several factors (e.g. existing water chemistry, sources of nutrient input) that should be taken into consideration before treatment of any kind should begin. For a list of practitioners in your area, please contact AquaBlok, Ltd.

Hand Broadcasting Application by Boat

In order to determine the quantity of BARACLEAR needed for an application you must first calculate the water volume to be treated (in gallons). The volume is determined by multiplying the basin's area (in square feet) by the average depth (in feet) and then multiplying that measurement by 7.481 gallons per cubic foot. For standard applications, apply at a rate of 1/2-lb. of BARACLEAR particles for each 1,000 gallons of water.

Broadcast the particles as uniformly as possible across the surface of the water. Consider targeting deeper water areas and/or regions with the greatest accumulation of sediment. Allow as many as 3-5 days to see noticeable clarity results – but recognize that the BARACLEAR is still at work at the sediment surface, binding phosphorus long after product application.

Repeat treatments as needed to improve and maintain water clarity. Keep in mind that at elevated concentrations, alum can lower pH of the overall system. Therefore, even in extreme circumstances, applicators are typically advised to allow at least four to six weeks between BARACLEAR treatments.

OTHER IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • For optimal results, the recommended water pH should be between 6.5 and 8.0 with an alkalinity of 50-200 PPM prior to product application
  • For very small ponds (under 1/4-acre) with high concentrations of fish, BARACLEAR can be applied with a skimmer rather than by applying directly – this can reduce the potential for ingestion of the particles by fish which may cause gastric distress
  • Waterways with extreme turbidity or high phosphorus levels – especially those that receive regular run-off from yards, golf courses, agricultural fields, etc. where fertilizers are routinely applied – may require higher application rates and/or more frequent treatments

If algae growth and/or clarity issues persist following one or more BARACLEAR treatments, please contact us either by telephone at ((800) 688-2649 or via email at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . A technical sales representative will be happy to make recommendations as to the best way to proceed with treatment.
